Resolving Interference Between Third-Party Accessories and a Vari-Angle Monitor with Simple Modifications
Introduction
I use a Nikon D5600 with a couple of third-party parts purchased from AliExpress: an oversized eyecup and a simple hand strap.
With the stock eyecup, pressing my face hard against the camera would sometimes leave nose oil on the LCD, so I attached the larger eyecup to keep my face at a fixed distance from the camera. Most hand straps loop around the wrist and don’t directly support your grip, but this one fits the hand surprisingly well despite its modest appearance.

Not directly related to this article, but the photo also shows an accessory on the hot shoe for clamping a smartphone. That accessory slightly interferes with the vari-angle monitor, so I resolved it by filing it down.
Eyecup
The interference occurs at this area. It protrudes downward and prevents the vari-angle monitor from opening.
This eyecup is held together with standard Phillips screws. Once disassembled, it separates into a rubber section and a plastic part.
Trim the rubber section…
Then sand down the plastic part…
Done! Here’s how it compares to the stock eyecup.
Hand Strap
The hand strap modification is even simpler. The interference occurs here.
Just cut that section with pliers and file it smooth.
Conclusion
After finishing the modifications and reattaching everything, here’s the result. The interference is gone and the vari-angle monitor can now be fully deployed. When sanding plastic, take appropriate precautions to avoid inhaling dust. It is also recommended to rinse the plastic parts with water once you are done.
